Council helping to publicise EU Settlement Scheme

Following the Government’s announcement to introduce a simple and straightforward application scheme post-Brexit, West Oxfordshire District Council is keen to share this news with EU citizens currently living and working in the district.

The EU Citizen and settlement scheme will open later this year to enable EU citizens arriving before the end of 2020 to apply for their status.

Cllr James Mills, Leader at West Oxfordshire District Council said: “We have a number of EU citizens living and working in the District, some of whom have been here for many years. We value their contribution to our communities and are pleased the Government has said that a new settlement scheme will ensure the process of staying in the UK will be as easy as possible.”

He added: “EU citizens and their family members do not need to do anything now but as details become available, we will be signposting people to the government website – https://www.gov.uk/settled-status-eu-citizens-families

There will be no change to EU citizens’ current rights until the end of the implementation period on 31 December 2020 and the deadline for applications for those resident here at the end of 2020 will be 30 June 2021.

Additional notes

The settlement scheme for EU citizens will open later this year to enable those arriving before the end of 2020 to apply for their status.

Draft Rules for the scheme were published on 21 June and they confirm that:

  • Applications will be via a short online process.
  • Most EU citizens will only need to prove their identity and demonstrate their residence in the UK. They will be required to declare whether they have any criminal convictions and we will check that they are not a serious or persistent criminal.
  • It will cost £65 and £32.50 for children under 16.
  • It will be free for those with valid documented permanent residence or valid indefinite leave to remain or enter.
